Frequently Asked Questions

1.  What is a “law enforcement district?”

A law enforcement district is a designated area formed for the purpose of providing law enforcement services specific to that area.

2.  As a resident in the unincorporated area of the Mohawk Valley, what level of law enforcement do I currently have?

The Lane County Sheriff’s Office has 25 deputies assigned to patrol unincorporated Lane County from the coast to the Middle Sister.  These deputies are spread out over 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, which equates to about three deputies and a supervisor per shift to provide response to emergency calls for service for all of unincorporated Lane County.

3.  If the measure passes, what would be the boundaries of the proposed Mohawk Valley Law Enforcement District?

The Mohawk Valley Law Enforcement District boundary, if passed, would mirror the current boundary of the Mohawk Valley Rural Fire District, shown on page 2.

4.  If the measure passes, what would the funds pay for?

If passed, the proposed assessed tax rate would fund one full time deputy that would be assigned to the Mohawk Valley to provide law enforcement response and investigation in addition to current services. Funds generated by the district would be statutorily protected so they could not be reallocated for uses other than law enforcement services within the district.

5. If the measure passes, what would the district cost me?

If passed, the $0.48 per $1000 of assessed value tax would cost the average homeowner in the Mohawk Valley Law Enforcement District $121.42 per year, or about $10.12 per month, based on the median assessed home value of $252,949.  Assessed value is NOT the same as market value.

6.  Where can I go to find the assessed value of my home?

You can look up the assessed value of your home by visiting http://apps.lanecounty.org/propertyaccountinformation/.  Statements can be found by address or by the name of the homeowner.

7.  How do I determine what I would pay for the proposed Mohawk Valley Law Enforcement District, if the measure passes?

$0.48 per $1000 of assessed value = proposed tax per year

Example:  Assessed Value = $252, 949

    $252,949 x .48 = $121,415.52

    $121,415.52/ 1,000 = $121.42 / year

8.  What if the measure does not pass?

If the measure does not pass, the proposed law enforcement services would not be provided and the proposed tax would not be assessed.
