City of Florence's Urban Renewal District

City of Florence District

The Florence Urban Renewal Agency (FURA) is responsible for carrying out the City of Florence’s long‑term Downtown Preservation and Renewal Plan. Established when the plan was adopted in 2006, FURA administers urban‑renewal activities, manages tax‑increment financing (TIF), prioritizes redevelopment projects, and overseas investments intended to strengthen Old Town, Highway 101, and the broader downtown area.

Downtown District

FURA’s core purpose is to revitalize and preserve Florence’s downtown, making it a thriving cultural, tourism, commercial, and community center. Its work aims to reduce blight, stimulate private investment, improve public spaces, enhance transportation circulation, and protect Old Town’s historic character. This mission comes directly from the Downtown Urban Renewal Advisory Committee (DURAC), which developed the original vision and objectives. FURA oversees a broad portfolio of projects, including infrastructure upgrades like sidewalk and streetscape improvements, utility undergrounding, stormwater enhancements, and Highway 101 safety measures; public‑facility expansions such as Old Town restrooms, parking upgrades, and wharf and dock repair; and redevelopment assistance ranging from below‑market loans to incentives for mixed‑income housing and Old Town storefront compliance.
