Deputy Sheriff

Deputy Sheriffs are hired into the Corrections Division, working in the Lane County Jail.   Deputies that successfully complete probation may apply for reassignment to the Police Services Division per labor contract.  

Below are the steps in the Deputy Sheriff hiring process:
  • Completion of employment application at
  • Successful completion of the Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT).  Information on the ORPAT can be found HERE.
  • Applicants who successfully complete the ORPAT will be invited to take the Police Officer Selection Test (POST).  The POST measures math skills, reading comprehension, grammar and spelling, and report writing skills. 
  • Oral board interview
  • Background, which includes a psychological evaluation and medical exam.
Candidates who successfully complete the hiring process will be offered a position or be placed on an eligibility list for up to one year. 

Deputy Sheriff new hires will be scheduled to attend the Department of Public Safety and Standards Training (DPSST) Corrections Academy within the probationary period.  Employees are paid while they attend the academy. 

Communications Officer

DispatcherCommunications Officers perform specialized duties in the law enforcement communications center, more commonly referred to as Dispatch.  Communications Officers answer incoming calls (both emergency and non-emergency) for police services and coordinate response to calls for service within Lane County.

Records Officer

Picture of Records OfficerRecords Officers in the Lane County Sheriff's Office can be assigned to a variety of areas including Civil, Reception, Police Records, Corrections Records, and other units as assigned.  Employees in these positions have a high degree of public contact both in person and over the telephone.  Records Officers may receive, route, and disseminate information to the public and other agencies, file and retrieve documents, perform fingerprinting for the public and employees, and use law enforcement data systems to input, send, and receive information.

Facility Security Officer

Facility SafetyOfficers (FSO) work at the Lane County Jail in Central Control and at Main Reception. 

Central Control
Facility Safety Officers are responsible for monitoring and controlling interior access to the jail through direct visual scan or closed circuit monitors, including routing response to audible alarms, perimeter alarms, and fire alarms.   FSO's communicate with staff via telephone, intercom, and radio to ensure safe and timely movement within the facility. 

Main Reception
FSO's are responsible for answering phones and processing the public for court and inmate visitation at the Main Reception area of the jail.   FSO's determine eligibility of all persons visiting the jail, including a contraband search of items brought into the visiting area.

Fiscal Staff

The Sheriff's Office Fiscal Section is responsible for the day to day financial operations of the agency.  Staff process accounts payable, receivables, and payroll.  Fiscal staff also apply for and monitor grants, create and manage contracts, and manage department supplies and uniforms including issuing and tracking of these items.  Other responsibilities include the preparation and monitoring of the agency's annual budget.
