In Lane County, police officer use of deadly physical force incidents are investigated by the Interagency Deadly Force Investigations Team (IDFIT). IDFIT is comprised of detectives from various law enforcement agencies that serve Lane County, and operates independently of the involved shooting agency as outlined in Senate Bill 111.
Immediately following the use of deadly force by a police officer, IDFIT responds to the scene and maintains the primary investigative role regarding the use of that force. The Lane County Deadly Force Plan provides a framework for a consistent investigative response that seeks the truth, promotes public confidence in the criminal justice system and treats the officer fairly.
Upon completion, IDFIT provides its investigation to the Lane County District Attorney. The DA reviews the investigation and determines whether the use of deadly force was lawful. Determinations are published, see “District Attorney Memoranda” below.
